To avoid a possible death sentence, he pleaded guilty to six counts of first degree murder in special circumstances and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In 2008, DNA evidence connected Kibbe to six other murders. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Kibbe's killing spree came to an end in the late 1980s, when he was arrested in 1988 for murdering 17-year-old Darcie Frackenpohl.
